Her question was 'what has he done' and not 'what seems to be the problem', telling the policeman all he needs to know about this particular man. Paloma is grateful that nobody in the room can see her face.
"Okay." Remaining meek and docile under these circumstances is no trouble. Her heart beats solidly in her throat. "I'm so sorry. I cannot apologize enough. I can be there in two mi-- where is he held?" She thinks of asking to speak to him and just as quickly decides not to. One of them will shout, or something else upsetting will happen.
He gives the name of the station and its address and even informs her that if she comes before someone relieves his shift, she can pick up her dumbass without a fuss, this time. But even he can't be so lenient as to excuse a second offense.
And surely she doesn't need to be told someone else might never take him to a police station to begin with.
Hyde sits in a cell with several other men in holding, and immediately jumps up like an excited puppy whose owner just came home, when Paloma walks in. He doesn't mind the drunktank life really, it isn't new to him, but finally he gets to see her!!
Paloma makes her apologies and excuses and drives with a fire lit under her ass.
The same officer greets her, visibly bored and interested in getting this over with. She waits by the desk area, hands clasped in front and so tight as to be white-knuckled, as miserable as Hyde is jubilant.
When he's freed, she doesn't speak a word to him, just takes his hand gently and leads him out.
"You done with work now? Can we do something?" Her mood doesn't seem to register with him. She's here!! He holds her hand in return, but links their fingers. Innocent in his own way.
Some parts mortified and some little bit disappointed, she only cuts through the silence after they’ve left the building and broken out into sunlight.
Paloma draws them alongside the steps leading up to the precinct and rounds on him with quiet intensity. “Promise not to make me visit you in jail again? Please?”
"Uhh...not on this trip, anyway?" Probably. But he definitely can't promise she'll never visit him in jail. "It's not like I'm gonna try to get arrested." He just doesn't try too hard not to.
Her dismay becomes more palpable at his reassurance, or what passes for it. Their hands are a tight line of tension from her clinging fingers to his.
“I know you’re a lot smarter than you let on, Edward. You just... go faster and harder through your feelings than I do. And you think of something you want and don’t hesitate.”
She flushes, aware of how attractive that generally makes him to her. “But they’ll spit you out into a bunch of paperwork before you ever get to jail. Do you want to be extorted?”
"No..." He pouts a little, shoving his spare hand in a pocket. "I just can't deal with being bored, y'know?" Bored here meaning both alone and sober, nothing to distract from everything that's wrong with and in his mind.
Satisfied that he at least receives the message and her solemnity, her hand leads him to the passenger side of the tatty old thing she drives. Paloma steps in close, gazing up. “Let’s find you something to do.”
Tell Jekyll about it, he's written prescriptions for his stupid, fucked up brother but he just won't take them! But he's absolutely stolen prescription paper to forge one for drugs.
"Yes, let's." He grins, wrapping an arm around her waist to pull her against him. "What ever could we think of?" Predictable.
