Perhaps in a sense. However it is not that I deny those qualities, it's only that I so rarely have use for them. Any man has the potential to be anything at all, it all falls upon circumstance.

What I am is as you said, an utter lack of denial. I am equally capable of kindness as I am cruelty, rare though it may be.

[What can he do but shrug.]

Why should it be the default, and not something earned? Would it not be more meaningful that way?

And slowly, he nods, accepting Edward's perspective.]

It is more meaningful. I . . . it means a lot, the kindness you've shown me.

I'm glad you understand. It means a great deal that you would give any forgiveness for my transgression against you - I certainly wouldn't wish to be a thing of horror for you, or else an enemy.

[He pauses, regarding Dorian and his expression.]

Only why then do you look to be so upset? I hope I'm no longer a horror.

You aren't!

[Dorian flusters to exclaim it. Then he stops. He steps forward.

Lightly, he touches Edward's arm. As if he is afraid to do so.]

But I still . . . remember it. Perfectly. [His eyes turn up to Hyde, and they are wide and glassy.] I remember every detail of it. I can't forget.

[It's really very simple to get a favourable response, isn't it...

He places his hand over Dorian's, meeting his eyes.]

You are alive now, and I will keep you from suffering ever more.

[Far too easy, given the light flush that settles on Dorian's cheek. After a moment, he can't even meet Hyde's eyes.]

I appreciate that, Mr Hyde. Thank you.

I thought I had graduated to Edward? There's no reason to be so formal. Are we not friends?

[depicted]

I don't know if we are. [He must point that out. But he is a little more flustered at slipping up and sliding back into formalities, and he shakes his head, curls bouncing in the motion.]

For all you say, it still seems best for you to go back to the battle. I don't know how entertain you waiting for it to pass.

[Closing what little gap still remains between them until he stands not an inch away, Hyde takes one of those curls between his fingers, twirling it between them.]

Are you so innocent as that? I'm sure you can think of a great many ways in which to entertain us both.

[He imagines a few might have crossed Dorian's mind by now, judging by the colour in his cheeks.]

[So Dorian's voice cracks.]

May I speak to Henry please!?

[God damn it, Jekyll better not fuck this up for him, but:]

As you wish.

[It's also in his better interest to do as Dorian wishes. This is almost a sort of courtship. So once again he returns his body to its rightful inhabitant, who immediately blushes to find himself so extremely close to another. He rushes to take a step back.]

--I hope that I wasn't all too terrible.

[But he remembers enough to know it was what he would label terrible.]

[Dorian basically heaves out his sigh of relief and steps back himself, quickly shaking his head. In some ways, he is just relieved Hyde listened to him. He was scared Hyde wouldn't.]

Henry! No, no, he was—Edward was very . . . kind. For Edward.

You know how he is.

I mean of course you do, you being him—

Well, that makes quite the relief!

[He offers a smile, ducks his head.]

I am glad that you, at least, are safe with me.

[Now, that is.

But it makes this awkward, something was clearly going on, Jekyll can read the situation and recall enough to realise that - besides he's too flustered himself. But he can't just ask.]

Yes! As am—I.

[He presses his lips together. Yes. How nice. Being safe.

This is so awkward.]

[He rubs his palm, looking anywhere but Dorian. Awkward indeed....]

Is- is there something you wanted to speak with me about, in asking for me?

[depicted]

[Dorian's lips press together. He shakes his head quickly.]

I only . . . didn't want to speak with him at that time.

Oh!! But—it's always a pleasure to speak with you, Henry. I mean.

[He smiles a little, dipping his head.]

I thank you for that. Did - is there a reason, in particular, for that...? Of course, I could entirely understand simple dislike for his company. That would not begin to surprise.

No, no, I enjoy his company—!! That is, ah, it wasn't that. I didn't—mean that.

[10/10 for grace and skill.]

Then-- I'm sorry, it is only that I worry for the things I do when I...cannot control myself.

[He thinks that should be good wording to declare awareness that it is still himself...but without taking the blame.]

Did he do something?

[Instead of answering, Dorian looks up at him, almost—hopeful?]

Do you mean the things he does? I mean do you—if he does something. Is it really something you'd want to do?

[Oh- there's a loaded question. Jekyll presses his lips together, chewing on the inside of his bottom lip. It's a pause that's just a bit too long before he answers.]

That...depends. No, I simply do not know, for a certainty, in most cases. Some, yes, others, no, but largely...I have no answer myself.

[Dorian is very quiet. His eyes flicker down, then back up again. He bites his lower lip.]

I should like to talk to him again, perhaps. Would that be all right, Henry?

[He thinks about it for a moment, but finally nods.]

So long as you feel comfortable with that. ...Should you discover anything, you will tell me, won't you?

[depicted]

[He reaches up, pushes to boldness to touch Jekyll's cheek.] I will, I promise.

[cagedinflesh]

[Taken by surprise, his cheeks flush more than he would like, and so there's some eagerness to escape to his bolder self, who doesn't feel shame. And then he smiles.]
